Entry assessments for
numeracy, literacy and ESOL teacher training
From September 2007, new teacher training qualifications were
introduced for the initial training of numeracy, literacy and ESOL
teachers in the lifelong learning sector in England.
In June 2007, LLUK published ‘Criteria for Entry to Mathematics
(Numeracy) and English (Literacy and ESOL) teacher training in the
Lifelong Learning Sector’, see www.lluk.org/documents/new_entry_guidance.pdf
This gave details of the new entry criteria, the process and
personal skills in Maths and English that applicants for numeracy,
literacy and ESOL teacher training qualifications needed to
demonstrate at level 3 of the qualifications and credit framework
(QCF) in their specialist subject.
Awarding institutions are now required to develop a process to
ensure that these criteria are met by all trainee teachers prior to
joining a programme.
The Skills for Life Improvement Programme has just published
sets of exemplar Maths and English entry assessments for numeracy,
literacy and ESOL teacher trainers to use as they recruit for their
teacher training courses.
The exemplar materials offer sample tasks mapped to the entry
criteria along with guidance for their use.
Please download the exemplar entry assessments here. You are
welcome to adapt and amend the material to suit your approach to
recruitment and entry assessment.

Thanks to LLU+ at London South Bank University for producing the
entry assessments. Thanks also to teacher trainers who contributed
their own materials and ideas and gave feedback on the pilot
exemplars.
